Before Korea 01 ·

BEFORE KOREA · LESSON 01 ·

Level: first steps · 처음 시작 / Study time: about 15 minutes · 약 15분

Before you travel, practise showing a destination and asking for help. By the end of this lesson, you can show an address, ask where to get off and ask someone to repeat a sentence.

1. Prepare a destination note ·

Save the following information on your phone so that you can open it without an internet connection. A paper copy can also help. Use the address supplied by your accommodation or the person meeting you.

[Place name]
[Address in Korean]
[Contact number]
[Meeting point]

2. Six useful sentences ·

    Excuse me.
Use this to get someone’s attention politely.

I would like to go here.
Show the destination on your note or map as you speak.

Please take me to this address.
Use this when asking a driver to take you to a destination.

    Where do I get off?
Ask about the place to leave a bus, train or other vehicle.

    Please speak slowly.
Use this when the person speaks too fast for you.

    Please say that again.
Use this when you did not hear or understand the sentence.

3. Notice the small differences ·

여기 means “here”. When you point at a map, it can mean the place you are pointing to. 주소 means “address”. In 이 주소로 가 주세요, marks the destination or direction.

천천히 means “slowly”; 다시 means “again”. These requests solve different problems. You can combine them: 천천히 다시 말해 주세요. — “Please say that again slowly.”

가 주세요 asks someone to go; 말해 주세요 asks someone to speak. In these sentences, -아/어 주세요 makes a polite request.

4. Practise a short conversation ·

Situation: You show a taxi driver the address saved on your phone. The driver asks to check it again. The conversation is a language-practice example.

Hello. Please take me to this address.

Driver ·
Please show me the address again.

Passenger ·
Yes, here it is.

Driver ·
Okay, understood.

Passenger ·
Thank you.

보여 주세요 means “please show me”. 말해 주세요 means “please say it”. If someone asks you to show the address, display your note rather than only saying the place name.
