Learn the expressions

When Mina’s 같이 공부해요 is a suggestion to act together, report 미나가 같이 공부하자고 했어요. Do not turn it into a statement that she studies alone or an instruction to study.

Original expressionReported expression

Attach -자고 to the verb stem: 가자고, 먹자고, 만들자고. Do not insert 으 because of a final consonant. Use context to establish that 같이 가요 is a suggestion.

Practice questions

1. Mina suggests studying together. Which report matches?

Answer:

The shared proposal is preserved.

— The joint suggestion is lost.
— A proposal became a question.

2. Report “Let’s eat together.”

Answer:

Attach 자고 directly to 먹-.

— It became a statement instead.
— No 으 is inserted.

3. What does 그날은 어려워요 indicate here?

Answer: Declining the proposed day

Interpret it within this proposal.

  • Refusing every future meeting — That wider claim was not made.
  • Already attended — It does not report attendance.

4. What is the status of someone who has not replied?

Answer: Unanswered

Record only the absence of a reply.

  • Accepted — Silence is not agreement.
  • Declined — Silence is not refusal either.

Learning check

1. Jun proposes studying at the library on Oct 18 at three p.m. Which matches?

Preserve the new proposal’s source, time and place.

— A proposal became completed study.
— This is the earlier model.

2. Mina: “Good. I’ll study with you.” Status?

Answer: Accepted

She replied with willingness to join.

  • Unanswered — She has replied.
  • Meeting completed — Intention is not completion.

3. Yuna declined and Aki has not replied. Which summary matches?

The different states stay separate.

— Aki has not replied.
— Agreement is not recorded.

4. How should you report Mina’s acceptance to Jun?

— The reply source changed.

5. What does 공부하겠다고 했어요 convey here?

Answer: Intention to join

Here it reports an intention.

  • Study has finished — It is not completed past.
  • The venue is unknown — It is not a venue question.

6. What is needed when collecting replies?

Answer: Separate each reply and missing reply

One person’s reply does not represent the others.

  • Treat the first yes as everyone’s yes — That generalizes beyond the respondent.
  • Assume all attend because the proposer wants it — Wishes and agreement differ.
